Not much fancying cooking after a long working day: we all know the feeling. That's why one in eight Dutch people now routinely reach for the delivery app at least once a week. People in their thirties in particular see delivery scooters pulling up outside their homes on a very regular basis. Pizza is the favourite, although in Drenthe and Friesland, among others, they see things rather differently. This is according to a survey of 1,053 Dutch people commissioned by Buitenkeukendeal.nl.
The figures clearly show that the youngest generations have grown up with the convenience of delivery. People in their thirties in particular – often with busy family lives and young children – order to their heart's content: almost a quarter order once a week or more. People in their twenties come close, while the 'appetite for ordering' clearly declines from the age of 60. Half of the over-70s even say they hardly ever have food delivered.
Pizza above all
When people do order, pizza is number one. Chinese takeaway takes a solid second place, followed by the 'old-school' snack bar. Young people also regularly choose döner, shawarma, sushi or a poke bowl, while for the over-60s there's a good chance the spring rolls and babi pangang are already on their way.
As well as ordering pizza, baking pizza yourself is also becoming increasingly popular, Buitenkeukendeal notes. Google Trends shows that 'pizza oven' was googled more often this year than ever before. Jesper van der Wal, owner of Buitenkeukendeal.nl, says he's increasingly delivering outdoor kitchens with a kamado. "That's essentially an all-in-one: you can barbecue and slow-cook on it and – with a pizza stone on top – bake pizzas too, in a way that comes close to the traditional stone-oven method."
Every province has its own delivery favourite
Incidentally, pizza isn't number one everywhere. In Drenthe, Friesland, Utrecht and Zeeland, Chinese is ordered most often, while people in Overijssel stick to chips from the snack bar. That could of course point to a particular taste preference, but outside the Randstad the choice is often simply smaller too.
And people don't order equally often everywhere, Buitenkeukendeal's survey shows. People in Utrecht are the biggest delivery fans: almost one in five order at least once a week. People in Zeeland and Drenthe, on the other hand, order almost three times less. More than one in three people in Zeeland even say they hardly ever order.
